The Pause That Changes Everything – Developing Energetic Awareness

Picture this: you’re driving peacefully down the highway when someone cuts you off. Instantly, your heart rate spikes, anger floods your system, and you’re shouting at a stranger who can’t hear you. In that moment, you’ve been energetically hijacked, pulled into their chaotic frequency without consciously choosing it.
Now imagine the same scenario, but this time you catch yourself in that split second when the anger starts to rise. You think, “Oh, I’m getting pulled into something here. Do I want to match this person’s energy, or maintain my own equilibrium?” That split second of recognition, that pause, is where your power lies.
Most of us go through life on autopilot, unconsciously absorbing and reacting to the energetic influences around us. We sync up with other people’s anxiety, anger, or chaos without realizing it’s happening. By the time we notice, we’re already caught in the emotional storm, doing or saying things we’ll regret later.
Developing energetic awareness means learning to recognize these influences as they’re happening, not after the fact. It’s cultivating what I call “present-moment awareness”, staying consciously engaged with the “now” rather than drifting into autopilot mode.
When you’re mentally elsewhere, replaying yesterday’s conversation or worrying about tomorrow’s meeting, you’re not monitoring your internal state. You become vulnerable to every energetic shift in your environment. That present-moment awareness acts like an early warning system.
The practice is simple but not easy: regularly check in with yourself throughout the day. What’s my internal state right now? Am I feeling calm, agitated, peaceful, or tense? Did this feeling originate from something internal, or did it shift when I encountered someone else or entered a different environment?
This isn’t about becoming paranoid or hypervigilant. It’s about developing the same awareness you’d have driving in traffic, staying alert to changing conditions so you can respond skillfully rather than just react automatically. The more you practice this pause, the more choice you gain. You start to notice: “This person is carrying a lot of stress, but I don’t need to absorb it.” Or: “This environment feels chaotic – let me maintain my center instead of getting swept up in it.”
Developing this awareness takes practice because these energetic influences often hit us faster than our conscious mind can process. You won’t get it right every time, especially in the heat of the moment. But you can learn from your mistakes and make better decisions the next time it happens. That pause, that moment of choice, gets easier with repetition until it becomes your natural response to energetic disruption. And that changes everything about how you move through the world.
