Building Your Energetic Sanctuary – Lifestyle Choices That Support Sensitive People

May 9, 2026 Mark Tompkins - Author

Most people stumble through life not understanding why certain situations drain them or why they feel most alive in specific environments. If you’re energetically sensitive, creating supportive living conditions isn’t luxury, it’s necessity. I’ve structured my entire life around honoring my energetic needs, and it’s made all the difference.

Here’s how:

Work environment matters. I write requirements documents for the Air Force, which means I can immerse myself in focused work. The energy in a military office is more disciplined and predictable than civilian environments, there are fewer chaotic, high-energy situations to navigate. People follow protocols and behavioral expectations that create energetic stability.

Location is everything. My wife and I live on a dead-end road in rural Louisiana on a lake. We rarely see anybody, and we love our solitude. Water has its own calming frequencies, rural settings provide natural rhythms instead of human-generated chaos, and the dead-end road means we’re not usually dealing with the energetic disruption of random traffic passing through our space.

Choose compatible companions. Find people that compliment your energy so there’s no drain, and no need to manage boundaries or decode mixed signals. This kind of energetic compatibility is rare and valuable, protect it when you find it.

Design routines that nourish you. Time fishing, hunting, working in the garage, doing projects around the house, playing video games together, watching movies. We rarely leave the house when we don’t have to, and we’re perfectly happy with that lifestyle. These activities either connect us to natural rhythms or allow us to be present together without the energetic complexity of social performance.

Curate your inputs. Books and music become safe havens because they’re contained energy sources. A book doesn’t suddenly change its emotional state. Music has intentional, structured frequencies rather than chaotic ones. You can control your level of engagement.

The key is recognizing that your sensitivity, rather than being something to manage or overcome, can guide you toward what truly serves you. Most people ignore their energetic responses and wonder why they feel constantly drained. You have the advantage of clear feedback from your nervous system about what works and what doesn’t.

Use that information to build a life that supports rather than depletes you.
