As Above, So Below: Unlocking the Wisdom of Hermes Trismegistus
In our last post, we explored the dramatic worldview of the Gnostics—the idea of a divine spark trapped in a flawed, material prison. It’s a powerful story of alienation and the quest for liberation. But it begs a question: if we are trapped, how do we understand the nature of our prison and the path to freedom?
The answer, according to Manly P. Hall and the entire lineage of Western esotericism, lies in a single axiom handed down from a legendary teacher known as Hermes Trismegistus. This principle is the master key that unlocks the relationship between humanity and the universe.
Today, we meet the “Scribe of the Gods” and learn the secret of “As above, so below.”
Who Was Hermes Trismegistus?
Hermes Trismegistus, whose name means “Hermes the Thrice-Greatest,” is one of the most mysterious and influential figures in esoteric history. He is not a single, historical person but a syncretic figure, a blend of the Egyptian god of wisdom, Thoth, and the Greek messenger god, Hermes.
To the ancient sages, he was the father of all sacred arts and sciences. He was the teacher of humanity, the one who first wrote down the secret laws of the cosmos and preserved them for future generations. The body of philosophy attributed to him, known as Hermeticism, is considered a foundational pillar of the “secret doctrine.”
The Master Key: “As Above, So Below”
The most famous and important Hermetic teaching is a simple phrase, often quoted from the legendary Emerald Tablet of Hermes:
“That which is Below corresponds to that which is Above, and that which is Above corresponds to that which is Below, to accomplish the miracle of the One Thing.”
What does this mean?
This is the Principle of Correspondence. It posits that the universe (the Macrocosm, or “the Above”) and the individual human being (the Microcosm, or “the Below”) are not separate things. They are reflections of each other. The same divine patterns, laws, and principles that govern the stars, the galaxies, and the entire cosmos also govern your own body, mind, and spirit.
Think of it like a hologram. If you shatter a holographic plate, every tiny fragment still contains the whole image. In the same way, you are not just a tiny, insignificant speck in a vast universe. You are the universe in miniature. You contain the sun, the moon, and the stars within your own consciousness.
The Power of the Microcosm
This is not just a beautiful philosophical idea; it is the ultimate empowerment. It means that the path to understanding God and the cosmos doesn’t require a giant telescope or a journey to the ends of the earth. The path lies within.
By studying the patterns of nature, you can understand the patterns of your own soul. And by understanding the depths of your own soul, you can come to understand the entire universe. The Gnostic may feel like a prisoner, but Hermeticism hands them a mirror that is also a map. It reveals that the structure of the prison is identical to the structure of the prisoner, and in that knowledge lies the key to escape.
This single principle is the bedrock upon which so many other esoteric arts are built. It explains how astrology can work (the planets above reflecting the soul below) and, most importantly, it provides the philosophical foundation for one of the most mysterious and misunderstood traditions of all time.
