Late one night in Perdition, Louisiana, Josh takes a back-alley path he’ll spend the rest of his life wishing he hadn’t. Something cold strikes him in the dark. Something is waiting in the steam and the gloom, and it has been patient.

What he finds in that alley cannot be explained, and what happens next cannot be undone. By the time the night is over, Josh will understand exactly how little of his own life belongs to him, and no one will believe the only true thing he has to say.
