What is the Oera Linda Book?
In the 1860s, a manuscript surfaced in the Netherlands, supposedly a centuries-old copy of an even more ancient family chronicle. Written in a strange alphabet, it tells the history of the Frisian people going back thousands of years, to 2194 BCE.
The book describes an incredible world where society is led by a series of “Folk-Mothers” who worship a goddess named Frya. They are a literate, seafaring people with a sophisticated culture long before ancient Greece or Rome. Then, a cataclysmic flood sinks their ancestral land, and the survivors are scattered, becoming the progenitors of various European peoples.
Sounds amazing, right? But here’s where it gets weird.
The Strange Aspects
The Oera Linda Book isn’t just a historical curiosity; it’s a minefield of controversy.
1. It’s Almost Certainly a Hoax: From the moment it appeared, linguists and historians have overwhelmingly dismissed the book as a 19th-century forgery. The language seems to be a clever imitation of Old Frisian, and the historical claims are impossible to verify. It’s likely a “pseudepigrapha”—a text falsely attributed to an ancient author.
2. It was “Himmler’s Bible”: This is the darkest part of the story. In the 1930s, the Oera Linda Book was championed by Heinrich Himmler, the head of the Nazi SS. The Ahnenerbe, his pseudo-archaeological think tank, promoted it as proof of a “pure” Aryan/Nordic race with an advanced civilization that predated everyone else. They saw it as a racially “pure” alternative to the Old Testament, calling it the “Nordic Bible.”
3. The Atlantis Connection: The story of “Atland” sinking beneath the waves is an unmistakable parallel to Plato’s story of Atlantis. But this version places the mythical homeland in the North Sea, giving Northern Europeans their very own Atlantis myth.
4. Ancient Feminism?: The idea of an ancient, sophisticated European society ruled by women was incredibly radical for the 19th century and remains one of the book’s most fascinating elements for modern readers. It presented a powerful alternative to the patriarchal histories of the classical world.

It tells us less about ancient history and more about the time it was written, a period of rising nationalism and a desire for a glorious, non-classical past. It’s a modern myth that took on a terrifying life of its own when it was co-opted by one of history’s most evil ideologies.
It stands as a powerful warning about how easily history can be forged and weaponized to serve a dark agenda.
