The Invisible Exchange – How We Unconsciously Absorb Energy From Others

February 16, 2026 Mark Tompkins - Author

You walk into a room and immediately feel tense, even though nothing obvious is happening. You meet someone new and instantly feel either at ease or slightly on guard, well before any meaningful conversation takes place. You spend time with a stressed friend and leave feeling drained and anxious yourself. Sound familiar? We’ve all experienced this, but we rarely examine what’s actually happening.

Humans have the ability to detect energy released from other people and their environment. We can feel “bad” energy from certain individuals and “good” energy from others. This isn’t imagination or superstition, it’s our nervous system picking up on electromagnetic fields, micro-expressions, pheromones, and subtle cues that our conscious mind hasn’t processed yet.
The detection happens automatically and instantaneously. Your body responds to someone’s energetic state before your brain has time to analyze their words or behavior. Someone carrying chaotic, heavy, or aggressive energy broadcasts that frequency, and if you’re sensitive to these patterns, you’ll pick it up whether you want to or not.

Here’s what most people don’t realize: this exchange goes both ways. While you’re absorbing energy from others, you’re also broadcasting your own energetic signature. Your peace, anxiety, excitement, or frustration ripples outward and influences the people around you, often without anyone being consciously aware of it.

Think about how certain people seem to calm a room just by entering it, while others bring tension wherever they go. They’re not necessarily doing anything obvious, they’re simply carrying and transmitting different energetic patterns.
This unconscious absorption explains why you might feel great in the morning, spend time with someone who’s angry or depressed, and find yourself in a completely different emotional state afterward. You’ve essentially synced up with their frequency without choosing to.

The key insight here is that while the detection might be automatic, your response doesn’t have to be. Once you understand that you’re constantly in energetic exchange with your environment, you can start making conscious choices about what you absorb and what you broadcast.

Understanding this invisible exchange is the first step toward energetic freedom. You’re not at the mercy of every person’s mood or environment’s chaos. You’re participating in a dynamic field where you have more influence than you realize, both in what you allow in and what you put out into the world. In the next post, we’ll explore how to develop the awareness that makes conscious choice possible.
